Bike Safety

  • Be Aware: Avoid distractions and be alert while moving. Expect to encounter people traveling around campus in many different ways.
  • Stop and Look: Cyclists must STOP at stop lights. If no traffic or pedestrians have the right-of-way, cyclists may YIELD at stop signs.
  • Share the Path: Cyclists and scooters use bike lanes in the road when available, otherwise share the path and yield to slower travelers.
  • Move Predictably: Avoid erratic riding and walking. Walk your wheels on narrow paths and during high traffic times of day and in crowded areas.
  • Go a Safe Speed: Observe posted speed limits. Keep to the right side of shared paths. Ride at a slower speed near pedestrians and in bad weather.
  • Gear up and Be Seen: Oregon Law requires all cyclists to use at least a front light and a rear reflector after sundown. Helmets reduce the risk of serious injury.
  • This video shows path etiquette in action. Remember to ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards only on designated campus bike routes. On non-designated campus paths, please walk your wheels.
  • Please use extra caution when crossing roads with two travel lanes in the same direction, such as Hilyard Street and Patterson Street. Be sure vehicles in both lanes are stopping before you cross.
